Sasha paused before she sat. One man chastised her, "Don't give yourself to it." His words fell like a splintered chime into her ringing ears. "That chair offers no life; only slavery," he shouted. Sasha's small chest heaved with sobs, but her eyes were too dry for tears. "Is laughter not worth it?" An older woman asked. "Tis the laughter of madness," another man answered, "Not joy."
